While it may seem like a solution to ease anxiety, sedating your pet during a flight can pose serious health risks.
Risks of Sedating Pets During Flights
Sedatives affect a pet's ability to breathe properly and maintain a stable body temperature. When a pet is sedated, its ability to adjust to changes in pressure and temperature on an airplane is compromised, which can lead to severe respiratory issues. This is especially dangerous for brachycephalic breeds, such as bulldogs and Persian cats, which already have breathing difficulties.
Moreover, sedatives can affect a pet’s balance and coordination, increasing the risk of injury if the kennel shifts during the flight. Sedated animals cannot adequately respond to turbulence or sudden movements of the plane.
Safe Alternatives to Sedatives
Instead of using sedatives, it is recommended to acclimate your pet to the kennel or transport crate weeks before the flight. This helps the pet feel secure and comfortable in its environment during the trip. There are also natural options, such as using lavender essences or valerian oil, to reduce stress without the risks associated with medication.
